MADISON (AP) — Boone Memorial Hospital has switched from a county-owned entity to an independent nonprofit.

Chief executive officer Tommy Mullins tells the Charleston Daily Mail that the change will make it easier for donors to contribute to the hospital.

The Boone County Commission formerly owned the hospital. Mullins says some charitable groups won’t consider donating to any government entities. Some also require recipients to be nonprofits.

Boone Memorial is seeking a $34 million loan from the U.S. Department of Agriculture to replace its aging facility. Mullins says the hospital would have to raise funds for the project if the loan isn’t approved in full.
