The 2012-13 school term for Logan County began Monday, August 20, went smoothly according to Logan County School Superintendent Wilma Zigmond.
“It was wonderful. Almost like we never stopped; we just picked up where we left off,” said Zigmond.
Zigmond said the educational needs never stopped, even during summer break.
“We’ve had workshops and stuff all summer long,” said Zigmond.
The ratio for student/teacher was exceeded in only two classrooms.
“I think we have two classes that are one or two children over, and that is pretty good,” Zigmond said.
Following the large amount of retirements last Spring, the BOE has been scrambling to fill the empty teacher slots, especially for Spanish teachers.
“We’re still trying to figure out how to deliver Spanish to all our students,” Zigmond said. “We had one take a medical leave, some retired and one left the area. We’re meeting with another man on Tuesday. Our biggest problem right now is delivering Spanish to Man High School.”
Zigmond said that no 7th or 12th grade students were turned away for not having the update on their vaccines which was required by the state this year.
“We did have some students who went to the new clinic at Logan to pick up their vaccination,” said Zigmond. “We’re working real diligently to get all our 7th and 12th graders vaccinated.”
Zigmond said attendance on opening day was a little over 5,800 students.
“Normally we go right around 6, 400,” said Zigmond. “But we pick up kids after Labor Day and then the Pre-K kids will come in which will be about three or four hundred. So we’ll be around 6,400, which is seems to be the magic number of Logan County for the last four or five years.”
This school term, all Logan County students will have free breakfast and lunches. West Virginia is one of only four states to be selected to participate in the Community Eligibility Option this school year.
“If today is any indication, we’re going to be feeding a lot of kids this year,” said Zigmond. “It’s all free, their first meal is. If they want a second breakfast, it is 50 cents and a second lunch is one dollar.”
