It was another successful weekend for the Chapmanville Middle School tennis team which traveled to the Parkersburg area to take on Blennerhassett and Edinson middle schools.
The CMS girls improved to 7-1 after defeating Blennerhassett, 10-1, and Edinson Middle School 11-0, while the Chapmanville boys split, beating Blennerhassett 4-2, and falling to Edinson 4-2 on Saturday at the Erickson Tennis Center in Parkersburg.
“This is the only matchup I had no clue what to expect coming into this year,” CMS coach Chris Kidd said. “I knew Edinson and Blennerhassett have had great success in the past, but we have never played these teams and I was worried coming in because the Parkersburg area is one of the best hot beds for tennis in this state. They’ve won multiple state titles at Parkersburg High School and Parkersburg South High School and I knew this was going to be a great measuring stick match. The kids played incredible. We’ve played our best tennis of the season in our last three matches.”
CMS didn’t have the services of its entire team.
“We came in short handed on the boys side. One of our boys couldn’t make it so that put us at a disadvantage, but they fought incredibly hard,” Coach Kidd said. “If you had told me they would have split with these two teams and us being down a boy I would’ve thought you were crazy, but these guys just keep plugging away and doing their job and playing as hard as they can at their position. I’ve been so proud of these boys I can’t even begin to describe how tough of a season they’ve had and how well they’ve done.”
In the girls’ match against Blennerhassett, CMS No. 1 singles player Cassidy Lewis won 6-4. Abby Marucm won 6-0 in the No. 2 match, while Hali Baldwin also took a 6-0 win in the No. 3 match. Chapmanville’s Richelle Thompson, Sara Lambert and Samantha Williams all took 6-0 singles wins as well.
In doubles, Lewis and Marcum (6-3), Baldwin and Myla Bryant (6-3), Lambert and Williams (6-0) and Thompson and Myka Veres (6-0) were winners.
In the boys’ match with Blennerhassett, CMS No. 1 singles player Brycen Kuenzel won 6-3. No. 3 Josh Miller took a 6-2 victory and No. 4 D.J. Conley prevailed 6-2.
In boys’ doubles, Miller and Conley won 6-4.
Back on the girls’ side, Lewis was a 6-2 winner against Edinson. Marcum, Baldwin, Lambert and Bryant all swept to 6-0 wins. Williams won 6-1 in a singles match, while Thompson won 7-5. Bryant also won another 6-0 decision.
In doubles against Edinson, Lewis and Marcum (6-1), Baldwin and Bryant (6-1) and Thompson and Lambert (6-0) were winners.
Against Edinson on the boys’ side, Conley took a 6-2 match. The No. 1 doubles team of Kuenzel and Austin Hanshaw won 6-3.
CMS was scheduled to play Winfield on Monday at the Chapmanville Regional High School tennis courts. CMS is then slated to have a tri-match on Saturday at 11 a.m. against Ravenswood and Logan at the Logan High School tennis courts.
