CHIEF LOGAN STATE PARK, W.Va. — Nearly 100 swimmers competed Saturday in the Chief Logan Rec Center’s second annual HYCAT swim meet.
HYCAT Director Greg Olson said he was pleased with the meet and he hopes to return next year for another competition.
“Like I said last year, the facility is terrific,” said Olson. “The kids really enjoyed it. We had about the same number as we did last year, just under 100. I think it’s a great place and I’ve already talked to (Rec Center Director) Terry Mullins about coming back next year and they want us back. Terry and her staff have done a great job.”
Swimmers from all across the state, including as far away as Parkersburg, Charleston and Huntington, swam in the meet that began at 8 a.m. and ran until around 2 p.m. This year’s meet was a one-day event, instead of two days, like last year. Olson said everything was great again and he hopes to return.
“The kids, parents and other coaches I’ve talked to say it is a wonderful facility,” said Olson. “It’s a fast pool, which means it was built right. I’m very pleased.”
Mullins said she was also very happy with this year’s swim meet.
“We had a lot of swimmers and everyone said they like swimming here,” said Mullins. “This is a great event and we hope it spurs interest in the new swim team that we’ve got here at the Rec Center.”
The Chief Logan Rec Center recently hired Kristy Schroeder, a Madison resident, to coach a competitive swimming club made up of kids from all across the coalfields. The team is known as the Southern West Virginia Swimming Club.
Olson said he is pleased to see the Rec Center finally get its own swim team.
“I want to see the swim team develop and I’m glad to hear they have 20 kids out,” said Olson. “The community just has to give it time. Hopefully, in a couple years, they will have a good, solid base and some of the area high schools will also be interested in starting swimming clubs.”
