HARTS – A trip down a road less traveled brought a group of people looking for a hunting camp to the home of an elderly woman in need.
Stopping by an old house at the end of a hollow, the four friends found Patsy Stender, an 84-year-old woman. Mrs. Stender, whose family lives out of state, lives alone.
Part of the roof on Mrs. Stender’s house had blown off and you could see inside her home from outside. She told them she had no wood or coal for heat. As the friends told her they wanted to help, Mrs. Stender said she had been praying for someone to help her and that her prayer had been answered.
The four were tearful as they traveled away from the home. They discussed the problem and formed a plan to help the woman. Word of mouth went through the community quickly. A carpenter made a list of what needed to be done. Donations of lumber, roofing and everything else needed poured in from churches and individuals throughout the community.
Everyone pitched in to mend Mrs. Stender’s house, bring in food and supplies, get her a supply of coal and wood for heat and they even got her a birthday cake as she just turned 84 years old.
Mrs. Stender was overwhelmed by the outpouring of love and service the community had shown her.
“I went to sleep and got up with a new home,” she said.
Her statement sounded like something from a fairy tale, which is appropriate since Mrs. Stender told them she played the role of Snow White at Disneyland, Cal. in her youth.
People from the community are continuing to look after Mrs. Stender and someone checks on her daily. One couple who helped and are continuing to help was Preacher Wornie and Sue Meeks. Others who were involved in the efforts include: Little Walnut Church, Garretts Chapel Church, Comfort Church Harts Baptist Church, River Bend Freewill Baptist Church, High Adventure Church, J.R. Manns, Ed Maynard, Dave Rife, Phillip Rife, Phillip Sperry, Ed and Ethel Meeks, Bud and Bonnie Jones, Terry Brumfield, Kenneth and Bridget Browning, Dallas Meeks, Jerry Farmer, Wayne Williamson, Kenny R.
