LOGAN —A violent Christmas day dispute turned deadly and ended with one man shot multiple times. The victim was taken to the Logan Area Medical Center, then flown to the Charleston Area Medical Center, where he is listed in critical condition. The man accused of shooting him is still on the run.
On Sunday, December 25, 2012 at approximately 3:23 p.m., Logan County Deputy Sheriffs were dispatched by Logan County 911 to Sun Catcher Street in the Henlawson area. The 911 dispatcher said a person had been shot and and they were given information during that initial call the shooter was Matt Brumfield.
When Cpl. F. N. Ferrell arrived on scene, several witnesses told him the shooter was actually Mack Brumfield. According to Cpl. Ferrell’s investigation, a physical assault had occurred earlier in the day between Mr. Brumfield and his girlfriend. The girlfriend had called her aunt to come and help her. The aunt came to the residence, bringing the girlfriend’s stepfather with her. A physical altercation ensued between Mr. Brumfield and the stepfather.
Deputies state the girlfriend had been standing at the back door when she heard multiple gun shots. She grabbed her small son and fled the residence. She stated she observed her stepfather exiting the back door and that he was covered with blood. She went to a neighbor’s home and called 911 for assistance.
A witness was in the residence when the physical altercation occurred and observed Mr. Brumfield remove a revolver from his pants pocket, aim it at the stepfather and fire multiple shots. The witness stated the stepfather fled the residence and Mr. Brumfield followed him with the firearm pointed at him. Witnesses also stated Mr. Brumfield ran away from the residence by foot and over the hillside with the firearm still in his possession. At this time, the information received by 911 about Mr. Brumfield fleeing on a red four-wheeler cannot be confirmed. It appears that Mr. Brumfield fled on foot from the scene.
Cpl. M. C. Sutherland went to the Logan Area Medical Center, where he was told the stepfather had been shot five or six times in the torso. Cpl. Sutherland spoke to the stepfather who told him Mack Brumfield was the person who had shot him.
The lead investigating officer in this case is Cpl. F. N. Ferrell II, who was assisted by Cpl. M. C. Sutherland, Cpl. B. D. Cobb, Deputy N. M. Booth, and K-9 Officer Jett. Mr. Brumfield is a white male, 18 years of age, was last seen wearing a red or maroon hoodie with jeans and has a tattoo on is right forearm of “MACK.” Brumfield is considered armed and dangerous at this time and law enforcement is actively searching for him. Anyone having information of the location or whereabouts of Mack Brumfield is being asked to contact the Logan County Sheriff’s Department at (304)792-8590 or the Logan County 911 Center.
