PECKS MILL, W.Va. — Mr. Virgil Baird, 89, of Pecks Mill, passed away Tuesday, January 16, 2013, at Trinity Healthcare Services at Henlawson.
Born April 21, 1923, at Jellico, Tenn., he was a son of the late William Granville and Martha Jane Stanfield Baird. Also preceding him in death was a daughter, Patricia Ann Vankovich; great-granddaughter, Kataria June Hurley; five brothers, Minton, Farris, Emmet, Ernest and Conda, and two sisters, Canzada and Almeda.
Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Loveada June Hall Baird; a daughter, Margie (Stanley) Ferguson of Wheelersburg, Ohio; two grandsons, Stanley Ferguson Jr. of Galloway, Ohio, and Ryan Keith (Amanda) Vankovich of McConnell; two granddaughters, Angela Dawn Baird of Boone County and Stacey Heather Ferguson of Sherman Oaks, Calif.; great-grandson, Brooks Ryan Vankovich; a sister-in-law, Maxine Quick of Chapmanville, and a host of nieces and nephews.
Virgil was a veteran of the U.S. Army and enjoyed many stories of his experiences in World War II while serving in the South Pacific. He was a proud Logan County coal miner for 40 years and always loved to talk about his days in the coal fields with his many friends and family.
Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday, January 18, at the Evans Funeral Home and Cremation Services with Rev. Ken Connelly officiating. Burial will follow in the Forest Lawn Cemetery at Pecks Mill with Military Graveside Rites.
Visitation will begin one hour prior to services Friday at the funeral home.
