LOGAN – A series of free diabetes education classes is scheduled at two locations in Logan County. Chapmanville Towers at Chapmanville and the Buffalo Creek Memorial Library at Man will host the classes in partnership with the West Virginia Medical Institute.

On Jan. 25, 2013, a class is scheduled for 1 p.m., at Chapmanville Towers located at 3407 N. Main St., Chapmanville. Additional classes will be held on February 1, February 8 and February 15 at the same time and place.

The Buffalo Creek Memorial Library located at 511 East McDonald Ave., Man, will host a series of classes beginning on January 28, 2013 at 11 a.m. Additional classes are scheduled for February 4, February 11 and February 25 at the same time and location.

Attending a series of classes will help participants learn everything they need to know managing diabetes. Nutrition, exercise, doctor visits, important tests and exams and medication management are topics to be covered in the classes.

Traci Gillispie, RN and Gina Clark, LPN will teach the classes. They hope to help people with diabetes learn to manage the complex disease and lead happier, healthier lives.

The classes are part of a program called Everyone With Diabetes Counts, which is funded by the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services, the federal agency that administers the Medicare program. Classes are open to people with Medicare who have diabetes, their family members and caregivers.

Gillespie and Clark are looking for additional locations and volunteers who are interested in learning to teach the classes to others are also needed. Anyone interested in hosting or promoting a class, or to volunteer, contact Gillespie or Clark.

The goal for the program is to provide education to 6,000 people with diabetes in West Virginia over the next two years. The program hopes also hopes to have 50 community volunteers trained to keep classes going.
