This majestic Eagle was spotted in Logan County by area photographer Scott Wigal on January 15 during an outing near Melville. An annual survey in southern West Virginia held Sat., Jan. 19, by nearly 100 observers covered sites along the New, Greenbrier and Bluestone rivers, Bluestone Lake, Indian Creek and Moncove Lake spotted 27 bald eagles, five golden eagles and two eagles of undetermined species. Pipestem Resort State Park Naturalist Jim Phillips, who started the winter surveys in 2006, said that the increase in eagle sightings is due to a growing eagle population in the area and having more observers looking for them.
