WEST LOGAN — Saturday promises to be a special day for American history buffs and railroad enthusiasts when the Island Creek Model Railroad Club hosts its first Open House at their new location next to Town Hall in West Logan. The open house will be Saturday, March 23, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The group hopes to have regular open houses monthly at their new facility.
On Wednesday night, Keith Vernatter, Marquita Vernatter, Jim Long, Dave Adams, “Big Dave” Long, “Little Dave” Long, Hunter Bradley, Thomas Bradley and Fred Bradley were busy working late hours to prepare for the Saturday event.
“We have been working to get ready for two and a half months,” Keith Vernatter said. “In addition to doing other things to get ready, we have built four new sections. We have some sections never seen before … and we have added a third main line.”
Members of the group are often found at the new location in evenings and Vernatter noted that when they are working on creating scale replicas of towns, bridges and coal tipples and setting up track the public is invited to step in and find out what it is all about. New members will be accepted when the group begins having regular meetings at the new facility.
“We have had some people who came in from different places who have expressed an interest,” one member noted.
“We hope that the schools will start bringing kids in too to see what life was like in the coal towns in the past,” Vernatter said, noting that preserving the history of the railroads and the towns that surrounded them was what the organization is about.
