A Logan native is in need of a lung transplant and is reaching out to his hometown for help.
Charles “Chuck” Curry served in the U.S. Navy and survived three tours in Vietnam on the USS Kitty Hawk and the USS Ticonderoga. At age 66, his activities and time with his two children and three grandchildren are limited by a serious health condition.
In 2010, Charles “Chuck” Curry began experiencing shortness of breath. A visit to the doctor resulted in a diagnosis of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Doctors now say a lung transplant is critical to his survival. He was recently added to the transplant waiting list and relies on an oxygen tank for every breath.
Curry is the son of Mary Curry, who taught fourth grade at Monaville Elementary School until her retirement. Mrs. Curry, who is 88 years old, drove by herself to visit him in Florida. She and her other two sons, Arthur and Randy Curry, all still reside in Logan. The family is working tirelessly to help raise money to pay transplant expenses.
According to the National Foundation for Transplants (NFT), the average lung transplant costs approximately $550,000. Even with health insurance, which will cover a portion of the transplant costs, there will be significant medical expenses related to the surgery and follow-up care.
Important facts about organ, tissue and cornea donation released by the Center for Organ Recovery & Education (CORE) indicate more than 800 patients in West Virginia and 117,000 nationwide are awaiting transplants; additional thousands could benefit from life-enhancing tissue transplants; at least 90,000 people across the nation are awaiting a kidney—kidneys are the organ in greatest demand, followed by liver, heart and lungs. Sadly, statistics say 18 people die every day while waiting for a transplant.
To help the Curry family with the transplant-related expenses, tax-deductible donations may be made to the NFT in his honor. To mail a donation, please send it to the NFT Florida Transplant Fund, 5350 Poplar Avenue, Suite 430, Memphis, TN 38119. Please be sure to write “in honor of Charles Ray Curry” on the memo line.
