MAN — Although it was ten days early, the spirit of Easter was prevalent when members and guests of START (Seniors Taking Active Role Today) met for their monthly meeting on March 21.
The fellowship hall of Bruce McDonald United Methodist Church was decorated in multi-colored pastels from table coverings, napkins, flowers to Easter eggs. Jane Grimmette displayed a large Mister and Miss Easter Bunnies.
The meeting was called to order by President Frank Thompson and introduced Patsy Tilley as a guest. Rev. Randy Sites prayed the opening prayer.
Following the Easter buffet, members celebrating their March birthday were recognized. The birthday celebrants were Laura Hinchman, Lessie Bailey, Jim Blevins, Zettie Brown, Pauline Jeffrey, Peggy Mosley, Mae Osborne and Pat White. While the birthday celebrants posed for their birthday picture, the group sang the “Happy Birthday” song accompanied by Alice Harrison at the piano.
The most senior birthday celebrant, Laura Hinchman, at age 94, wore a silver tiara encrusted with various gems purchased from the Dollar Store. She was presented with a beautifully decorated cake made especially for her by Zettie Brown.
Afterwards, Robert and Dixie Frazier presented a wonderful gospel musical program appropriate for the Easter season. With the departure of START’s original resident vocalist, START has been blessed with Robert and Dixie agreeing to be resident vocalists.
After a brief business session, there was a drawing for door prizes. Winners of the door prizes were Peggy Heatherman, Bill McNeely and Delores Spears.
The 45 members and guest signing the attendance register were Lessie Bailey, Lou Arnold, Winsel and Grace Elliott, Elmer and Lounice Jeffrey, Jane Grimmette, Jean Wintz, Norma Jean Nelson, Helen Nelson, Alice Harrison, Angeline Bassham, Dr. Rallos, Peggy Heatherman, JoAnne Hensley, Bill and Donna McNeely, Laura Hinchman, Patsy Tilley, Pauline Jeffrey, Lee and Billie Noel, Robert Perry, Merlin and Delores Spears, Arthur and Barbara Brunty, Robert and Dixie Frazier, Shirley and Zettie Brown, Betty Gentry, Rev. Randy Sites, Gretchen Donahue, William Coyer II, Paul and Donna Thibault, Mayor Jim Blevins, Tom Crosby, Gertie Moore, Sherry Frye, Patricia Doczi, Mae Osborne, and Frank and Elaine Thompson.
The next meeting will be held at noon Thursday, April 25, in the fellowship hall of Bruce McDonald Memorial United Methodist Church.
“START meetings are not for members only. You are invited to attend,” said Thompson. “Who knows? You might become a member.”
