It’s been a rough season for the Logan High School softball team.
But it got a little bit sweeter on Wednesday after the Lady Cats routed Nitro 14-4 in the Class AAA Region 4 Section 2 tourney at St. Albans.
Logan (12-15) advanced to play host St. Albans in Thursday night’s sectional championship round. The Lady Cats and St. Albans (25-4) were scheduled to play two games on Thursday in the double elimination sectional finals.
Since both teams are 1-0 in sectional play at split would force a winner-take-all title game on Friday night at St. Albans.
St. Albans, ranked No. 5 in the state in Class AAA, advanced to the finals with Wednesday night’s 9-1 win in the tourney opener. With the two losses, Nitro has been eliminated.
Several Logan players had big games against Nitro.
Senior pitcher Shana Hall, who has been out the last two weeks due to arm troubles, made a triumphant return to the mound as she fired a complete game three-hitter. She went all seven innings and issued no walks.
Rachelle Toppings, Logan’s senior shortstop who signed recently with the University of Charleston, was 4-for-5 at the plate with a solo home run and a double.
Aarron Ward, who has also missed some games recently with a sore arm, was 3-for-4 with a triple and an RBI.
Hannah Kolovich was 2-for-5 with a triple, a double and three RBI. Summer Collins went 2-for-4 with a pair of singles. Hana Sedlock was 1-for-2 with a triple and two RBI. Chastidy Wiley had a double and an RBI for the Lady Cats.
St. Albans was led by Ali Haynes in its win over Nitro. Haynes launched a grand slam for the Red Dragons in St. Albans’ eight-run second inning.
Whitney Jones doubled and drove in three runs for the Red Dragons.
