MAN — The Man High School baseball team closed out the regular season on a high note by defeating Westside 3-1 on Thursday night at Man’s Dr. Juan Nordelo Field.
It was the third win of the season for the Hillbillies.
Man (3-21) is set to play a best-of-three game Class A sectional series with Tug Valley this week at home.
Braden Griffin pitched a complete-game seven-inning win over Class AA Westside as he struck out 14.
Man outhit the Renegades 8-3.
The Billies took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning off Westside pitcher Casey Davis.
Man made it 3-0 with two more runs in the bottom of the third.
Westside’s lone run came in the top of the fourth inning.
Noah Maynard led the Billies’ hitting attack as he was 2-for-3 with two RBI.
Freshman John Thomas Keffer also had two hits and scored two of Man’s runs.
Senior Cody Carter was 2-for-3 with an RBI. Griffin and Mikle Scott Rowe had one hit each.
Man committed no errors in the game. Westside had one error.
Game 1 with Tug Valley is scheduled for Monday night at home. The Panthers enter post-season play with an 8-11 record.
Man and Tug Valley did not meet during the regular season..
George Washington 5,
The Logan High School baseball team lost 5-4 at home to George Washington in Thursday night’s regular season finale.
Johnny Morrison was the starting pitcher for Logan (17-8). He hurled seven innings and gave up five unearned runs.
Z. Minnick and Chase Preston paced the Cats with two hits apiece. Troy Burgess, Trent Dalton, Trace Butcher and Kyle Harvey all added singles.
Both teams committed three errors in the game.
Logan is scheduled to travel to St. Albans (18-9) on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. in the Class AAA sectional tournament. Nitro (19-10) plays St. Albans in Game 1 on Monday night. Logan then hosts Nitro on Wednesday night in Game 3.
The Wildcats are 4-0 this season against sectional foes. Logan beat St. Albans 4-0 and 4-1 and toppled Nitro 4-3 and 11-1.
Nitro was the 3A state runner-up last year.
CHAPMANVILLE — The Chapmanville Regional High School baseball team swept to a doubleheader win over Mount View on Friday night at Ted Ellis Field in the regular season finale.
The Tigers took the first game 16-4, then coasted to a 14-1 victory over the Golden Knights in the nightcap.
Austin Ellis was the starting and winning pitcher in Game 1. He was relieved by Alex Berry and Nick Brumfield. Scottie Thompson was the starter and winner in Game 2. Chase Roberts pitched in relief.
Chapmanville, 21-7 on the season, is now set to play a best-of-three Class AA sectional series with rival Scott this week. Game 1 is set for Monday at 6 p.m. at Madison. Game 2 is Tuesday night at 6 at Chapmanville. Game 3, if necessary, would then be played on Wednesday night at Madison in another 6 p.m. first pitch.
The Skyhawks and the Tigers split in two games this season. Scott won 6-5 at home and lost 10-8 later in the season at Chapmanville.
The Tigers are on a hot streak heading into the post-season as CRHS is 13-3 over its last 16 contests.
