MADISON — It took four days to play the first game of the Class AA sectional tournament between the Chapmanville Tigers and the Scott Skyhawks.
But in the end Scott defeated the Chapmanville Regional High School baseball team 5-4 on Thursday night in Game 1 of the sectional tourney at Madison.
The game was a continuation of Monday’s contest which was suspended in the third inning due to rain with Chapmanville leading 2-0.
The game was slated to be picked up on Tuesday and then Wednesday but rain again forced the postponement.
When play finally resumed on Thursday, Chapmanville plated one run in the third and one in the fourth to take a 4-1 lead. Scott then scored one in the last half of the fourth and two more in the bottom of the seventh to win.
Scott’s Cody Brown hit a walk-off single to right for the game winner. Brown finished with three hits to lead the Skyhawks (17-14). Forrest Spurlock also hit a homer and drove in two runs for Scott.
William Copley, Tristan Thompson and Brent Bigley had two hits each for the Tigers (21-8).
Scott outhit the Tigers 8-7.
Dustin Conley was the starting pitcher for Chapmanville. He was relieved by Trey Dalton in the fifth. Dalton was the pitcher of record for CRHS.
Chapmanville and Scott were scheduled to play Game 2 on Friday at Chapmanville’s Ted Ellis Field but an afternoon rainstorm soaked the playing surface and the game was postponed.
Playing on Saturday was not an option either with more rain expected and Chapmanville Regional’s prom which was scheduled for that night.
The Skyhawks and the Tigers are scheduled to resume the sectional tourney on Thursday at 4:30 p.m. at Chapmanville’s Ted Ellis Field.
A third game would then be played, if necessary, on Friday night in Madison.
No games are allowed to be played on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday due to the WESTEST.
