The Chapmanville Regional High School track and field team closed out a successful 2013 spring season with a fair showing at last weekend’s Class AA state meet at Charleston’s Laidley Field.
Andrew Workman, a senior and three-year CRHS track team member, medaled in the 200-meter dash as he finished fourth.
Mara Mazzocchi qualified for state and competed well in the 400-meter dash.
“She is the first from Chapmanville to my knowledge that has ever made it to the state competition in that event,” CRHS track coach Joetta Thompson said of Mazzocchi. “She did not place at states this year, but she did move up one place from where she was when entering the competition. She is a sophomore and this is her first year. She is very excited about running track next year and plans on developing her distance running technique.”
Chapmanville freshman Christina Osborne, ran on the Lady Tigers’ relay teams and also competed in the 100-meter dash at state, logging a time of 13.43.
“This was Candice’s first year of running track and she was able to make it to states on this event. She runs the second leg of the event,” Thompson said. “Christina also made it to the competition in the 100-meter dash solo. She ran the 100 in 13.43 seconds and plans to run again next year and become even faster.”
Senior Autumn Baisden also ran well on Chapmanville’s 4x200 relay team, Thompson said.
“Autumn is a four-year track member,” Coach Thompson said. “She made it to the state competition last year in the 100-meter dash and this year in the 4x200 relay. The fourth runner on the girls 4x200 was Codi Conley, a sophomore, and first year runner. The girls finished with a time of 1:56.35.”
Back on the boys’ side, sophomore sprinter Devin Wiley was eighth in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.93. He also ran on Chapmanville’s 4x100 and 4x200 relay teams with Andrew Workman, Zach Thompson and Ethan Thompson.
Ethan Thompson also qualified for the 100-meter dash at state and ran a 11.90 in the preliminaries.
