CHAPMANVILLE — The first Aracoma Drug Store opened at Logan in 1912. George Kostas was the pharmacist and owner. As the business grew and changed, he decided to open a second store at Chapmanville.
That store opened in 1975 in the George Chapman Building, which was where Hardee’s is now. The store was under the direction of Walter Vance, who also served as pharmacist. The Logan store closed in 1994, leaving the Chapmanville store to continue the tradition of service to the community.
Walter Vance passed away in 2011, and long-time manager Sue Compton recently retired, leaving Vance’s wife Lynn in the position of store manager.
“I was an elementary school teacher for 32 years. This is a new posistion for me, but I love it. We are pleased and proud to be celebrating our 101 years on the same day West Virginia celebrates 150 years,” said Vance, “Everything is on sale 25 percent off today, we are serving free hotdogs, drinks, cake, ice cream and other goodies to show our appreciation to our community for their support over the years.”
The store is much more than a place to get prescriptions filled. There are candies, gifts, jewelry, novelty items, regional artist’s framed art, and a complete Merle Norman cosmetic studio.
Aracoma Drug is located at 3602 N Main St. at Chapmanville, across from Speedway, their phone number is 304-855-4541.
