Laeman Jennings Butcher and Doris Jean Toney grew up in Logan. Both attended Logan High School where they met and fell in love.
Excerpts from their wedding announcement read:
“Miss Doris Jean Toney, granddaughter of Mrs. Pearl Sparks of Logan, was married at 4 pm, July 2, to Corp. Laeman J. Butcher in the Nighbert Memorial Methodist Church in Logan. The groom is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Lonnie Butcher of Mounts Addition. The Rev. Paul Redfearn performed the double ring ceremony. The bride, who was given in marriage by her uncle Arthur Sparks of Huntington, wore a ballerina length gown with white lace. Miss Sue Ann Moss was the maid of honor. Bridesmaids were Miss Mary Beth White and Miss Donna Gordon.
Jerry Gill served as the groom’s best man and ushers were Jim Ascough & Clyde Wooten. After their honeymoon in Chicago, the couple traveled South to make their new home where Corp. Butcher was stationed with the United States Marine Corp in Jacksonville, N.C.”
60 years later, the couple resides in Dadeville, Ala., where they will celebrate 60 years of wedded bliss on July 2, 2013,with their three children: Tommy (Gail), Karen and Genise (Rick), their four grandchildren: Josh (Danielle), Brian (Shona), Blake (Laure), and Lauren, and two great-grandchildren: Mark and Adeline.
