Logan County resident Adam Spriggs was “coated” during the 2013 Clinic Induction Ceremony for the WVU School of Dentistry, Doctor of Dental Surgery (D.D.S.) Class of 2015. The ceremony was held at WVU’s Robert C. Byrd Health Sciences Centers’ in Morgantown Saturday, September 7, 2013.
Forty-eight students were presented white coats by Dr. Shelia S. Price, Associate Dean. Speakers were Dr. Robert L. Wanker, Associate Dean; Dr. David A. Felton, Dean; Dr. Christopher C. Colenda, Chancellor; and Dr. Greg Lacy, WVU Dental Alumni Association. A reception for students, faculty, family and guests was held following the ceremony in the Learning Center Commons area.
The Clinical Induction Ceremony denotes the passage of third-year dental students from the classroom portion of their training into the clinical portion. The presentation of white coats is symbolic as it signifies expertise, professionalism and excellence. The students are preparing to become competent dental professionals who will be dedicated to providing comprehensive, compassionate, high quality oral health care to diverse patient populations in West Virginia, the nation, and beyond.
Sprigg is a graduate of Logan High School. He is also a graduate of the first Dental Hygiene Class of Southern West Virginia Community and Technical College. Sprigg earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Biological Sciences from Marshall University.
He is the son of Shirley Dardi of Logan and Mark Spriggs of Madison. He is the grandson of Benny and Catherine Adkins of Verdunville and Rita Spriggs and the late Larry Spriggs of Switzer. He has one sister, Amanda, who is currently pursuing a Ph.D. in Biological Anthropology at University at Albany, State University of New York. He is the nephew of Cathy Adkins of Logan.
The WVU School of Dentistry is the state’s only dental school. Over 80 percent of West Virginia dentists are graduates of the program. Many of the faculty and graduates are recognized leaders in dental education and organized dentistry.
