Mingo Central (2-1), ranked No. 15 in Class 2A, will travel to Westside Friday night.
The Renegades are No. 20, with a record of 1-2 and are coached by former Gilbert coach Larry Cook. Cook played on the offensive line at WVU back in the 1980s.
Mingo Central, after losing a tough one point game in the season opener against Wyoming East, has bounced back to win two games.
Last week the Miners rolled over Webster County. In week two they squeaked out a one point win at Tolsia.
Coach Yogi Kinder’s young squad is growing up fast. Other than a couple of key players, most of his starters are underclassmen.
Junior running back Chance Lester has 155 yards on 22 carries and a pair of touchdowns, while sophomore Denote Joplin has 184 yards on 28 carries and a TD. Joplin also has a kickoff return for a score on his resume.
Junior Chase Justice has 103 yards on 15 tries and a TD, while fullback DeKwon Willis has two rushing TDs and 90 yards rushing.
Young sophomore quarterback Stevie Hammond has rushed for 153 yards on 25 carries and four rushing TDs. He had three touchdowns last week against Webster County. Hammond is 18-30 passing with two TDs and a pair of interceptions.
Senior Alex “Booger” Lee leads the receivers with five catches for 192 yards and a score.
Westside is led by junior running back Mike Mullens. Senior quarterback Justin Cogar has been injured. Other backs are juniors Bryce Robinson and Justin Kenneda. Kyle Goodson could also see action for Cook out of the backfield.
Westside has good size on its line and they have worked hard in the weight room in the off season.
Kickoff is at 7:30 p.m.at Clear Fork in Wyoming County. The Renegades colors are silver and black. The game can be heard on WXCC 96.5 FM with Joe Kinzer and Pedro Ledger.
