The bridge on U.S. Hwy. 25E that crosses the Little Sycamore Creek was dedicated Monday morning in memory of two young people who died in a wreck at an intersection near there.

Katie Johnson, 19, and William “Will” West, 22, both of Tazewell, died March 31, 2012, as the result of a two-vehicle wreck at the intersection of U.S. Hwy. 25E and Lone Mountain Road in the Springdale community. The wreck occurred around 2 a.m. Johnson, the driver, was taken to the University of Tennessee Medical Center in Knoxville where she died later Saturday. West was pronounced dead at the scene.

The deaths of the two young people pulled the community together. A candlelight vigil was held just days after the wreck, and several fundraisers took place to assist the families with expenses. A group of family and friends erected a handmade cross near the wreck site to memorialize the two as well.

The Claiborne County Commission voted unanimously earlier this year to dedicate the bridge in their memory. Many family members and friends gathered to see the unveiling of the signs, as well as Congressman John Duncan Jr. and other officials.
