Another annual Chili Cook-Off, Crafts and Yard Sale has come and gone, with this year’s event a success according to organizers.
The annual event is held at the Tazewell Municipal Park and is an opportunity for area residents, businesses and organizations to show off their talents and cooking prowess by making chili to be judged by the people in attendance as well as a panel of independent judges.
This year’s winner is no stranger to the people who have attended in the past. Debbie Davis came away with two titles, Judges’ Choice and People’s Choice. Davis made two different recipes: Dogg Gone Good Chili, which won the People’s Choice category, and Too Hott to Handle Chili, which won the Judges’ Choice category. Davis has won prizes in the competition the past two years.
Other winners in the Judges’ Choice category were: Alice Hopson, second place, Chiliville Chili; Debbie Davis, third place, Dogg Gone Good Chili and Karen Reece, fourth place, Smokin’ Smoky Mountain Chili.
Other winners in the Peoples’ Choice category were: Debbie Davis, second place, Too Hott to Handle Chili; Vicki Whitaker, third place, Pappy’s Tweakin’ Chili and Karen Reece, fourth place, Smokin’ Smoky Mountain Chili.
The top four winners in each category received monetary prizes and trophies. The first place winners received $100, second place winners received $75, third place winners received $50 and fourth place winners received $25.
There were also numerous vendors set up with crafts, food items and yard sale items.
“It was a wonderful day and a great event,” said Carl Nichols, chairman of the Tourism Commission, which sponsors the event. “On behalf of the Claiborne County Tourism Commission I’d like to thank the sponsors, the chili competitors, the vendors and the volunteers, all of whom helped to make this event a success.”
Nichols and others will soon be working on next year’s event.
“I hope everyone puts it on their calendar for the second Saturday in October 2014,” he added.
