MAN — The Man High School volleyball team was not able to win its sectional tourney but the Lady Billies still advanced to Saturday’s Class A regionals.
Man played Greater Beckley Christian on Thursday night in the Class A sectional championship match at the Man Memorial Fieldhouse and lost 3-1 to the Crusaders by the scores of 24-26, 22-25, 25-16, 19-25.
The runner-up finish moved Man into the regional tourney, which was held on Saturday at Appalachian Bible College in Beckley. Man ended up beating Fayetteville 3-1 to advance to the Class A state tournament.
The victory over Fayetteville put the Lady Billies into the state tourney — a first for a Logan County girls’ volleyball team. Man, which has played volleyball since the mid 1990s, is scheduled to open state play this coming Friday at the Charleston Civic Center.
Man advanced to Thursday night’s sectional title match with a dramatic 3-2 win over Sherman by the scores of 25-20, 19-25, 25-16, 22-25 and 16-14.
In the fifth set of the match the Lady Billies were down 12-5 and 14-11 and found a way to pull it out.
“Mika McCoy continued her solid play,” Man coach Orlando Washington said. “Hannah Harvey continued her steady play. Hunter Harvey also continued her steady play as well. I am really proud of how they played as they were down with their backs against the wall. They stayed strong and battle back as a team and pulled it out which makes me happy. I am now starting to see girls show passion on the court which means that they are really starting to care about the results and to me that’s the first for teams to make if they what to win consistently and win championships whether it be tournaments, sectionals or regionals.”
Washington said mistakes cost Man in the finals vs. GBC.
“I felt like we outplayed them in the first two games but our mistakes enabled them to win those games and in the fourth and deciding game they outplayed us. I believe that if the girls continue their steady improvement that Saturday could be a very good day for them,” he said.
Man was 23-19-1 heading into the regionals.
