The Man High School volleyball team saw its season come to an end on Friday morning with a loss to East Hardy in the first round of the single-elimination Class A state tournament at the Charleston Civic Center.

Man, coached by Orlando Washington, finished the season with a 24-21-1 record.

The Lady Billies made history this season by becoming the first volleyball squad from Logan County to play in a WVSSAC sanctioned state tournament.

The SSAC has held a state girls’ volleyball tourney since 1980. Man didn’t start a volleyball team until the 1990s. Chapmanville and Logan followed in the early 2000s.

Saturday’s Class A state championship match pitted Wirt County against Tyler Consolidated.

Wirt County advanced on Friday with straight sets wins over Magnolia and Greater Beckley Christian. Greater Beckley, which beat Man in the sectional and regional tourneys, advanced with a straight sets win over Charleston Catholic and a win over four over East Hardy.

Wirt County was looking for its first state title in two years. The Tigers have won eight state crowns since 2000.
