“And the same time there arose no small stir.” (Acts 19:23)
As the apostles traveled about preaching the gospel, there seemed to be constant trouble dodging their steps. One example was the stir caused by Paul when he made known that there are no gods which are made by hands. A silversmith named Demetrius called together the workmen in that occupation and made known to them that their craft was in danger of being destroyed because people were not buying the statues they sold dedicated to the goddess Diana, whom many people in Asia worshipped.
Paul had the same problem in other places, and in his letter to the Corinthian brethern, he said, “We would not, brethern, have you ignorant of our trouble which came to us in Asia, that we were pressed out of measure, above strength, insomuch that we despaired even of life.” (2 Cor. 1:8) He made known that God delivered them from death.
In our own day, we realize that men are still being persecuted for their stand for Christ. In many countries around the world, our missionaries suffer persecution, and some even die for their faith. We should be constantly praying for their safety and asking God to be with them, and help them not to be afraid.
Sometimes there are disagreements among the people of God in our churches. There are divisions that are detrimental to the church of God, and we should exercise care in becoming involved in the problem.
As Christians, we should seek to get along with our fellow men. We should be examples to those outside the fellowship that we all want to honor the Lord by our desire to have peace in our midst. Although we may not always agree with what our brothers in Christ are saying and doing, we much peacefully settle our differences. That will please the Lord.
Trouble was stirred up in Ephesus,
When the apostle Paul spoke out,
About worshipping idols made by hand,
And the craftsmen were angry without doubt.
May we realize today,
That trouble may come our way,
If we are strong enough to stand up for Christ,
If we decide we will obey.
Dear God, Help me to take a stand for you, even if I am criticized and may have to suffer for your sake. In Jesus name I pray. A-men.
