Stanleys celebrate 70 years of marriage

January 19, 2014

Hayes and Causby Jean May Stanley will celebrate 70 years of marriage on January 20, 2014.

Hayes, formerly of Wolf Creek, Ky., and now 90 years old, says he would do it all over again. He and Causby took their vows on Jan. 20, 1944, in a small church on a snowy day with only Causby’s father, Henry May, who paid the preacher and attested to Causby’s age, in attendance.

Hayes and Causby settled in Breeden, W.Va., where he served as postmaster for 30 years. In addition to serving as a clerk for Hayes at the post office, Causby also worked for many years as a cook at the former Dingess Grade School. Their marriage produced seven children and, so far, 17 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Upon retiring, the couple relocated to Prichard, W.Va., where they built a new home surrounded by the homes of four of their children.

When asked about the secret of a long, successful marriage, Causby said, “We have been blessed. I have always put my faith in God. Life is a daily thing and, before you know it, 70 years have passed.”
