Upward Look: But Be Of Good Cheer

By Mae Stallard

“These things have I spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation, but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.” (John 16:33)

As Jesus spoke to the disciples about the fact that He will soon be leaving them and going back to the Father, they did not understand. They talked among themselves as to the meaning of his words. Although they would weep, the world would rejoice: the disciples would be sorrowful, but their sorrow would be turned into joy.

Jesus also warned the disciples that they would be scattered, every man on his own, and they would leave him alone: and yet He is not alone because the Father is with Him. He then explained this to them that they might have peace. In the world they would have tribulation: but they were to be of good cheer; for Jesus had overcome the world.

In this world we face so many trials and tribulations. Sickness and sorrow are a part of this life, but the Lord brings comfort and healing in our time of need. One of the most comforting things that the Lord has given to us in His Holy Word are His promises that “I will never leave you nor forsake you.” (Hebrews 13:6) Also, “Lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world.” (Matthew 28:20)

Regardless of our situation, we are to remember that Jesus was willing to come to this evil world and die for us that we might have the opportunity to live with Him forever in heaven, if we accept Him as our Savior.

The Lord wants us to also have peace, even amid the problems we face. He wants us to have peace with God, peace with our fellowmen, and peace within. It is through Him that we are enabled to have this blessing. May we praise His holy name for this special gift.

Poem

We thank the heavenly Father,

That He blesses us so much,

And assures us that even though we suffer,

Our lives He does continually touch.

His promise to always be with us,

Brings comfort to our heart,

And strength to face tomorrow,

Through faith that He does impart,

Prayer

Dear Father, we praise you for the love and peace that passes understanding. Give us grateful hearts. O Lord, In Jesus name we pray. Amen.
