Childhood birthday parties usually consist of balloons, games, a gaily decorated birthday cake and lots of surprises found in colorfully wrapped boxes. One local girl celebrated her eighth birthday recently but instead of presents, she asked guests to bring a donation to help homeless animals.
Roxy Winter, the daughter of Michael and Larra Winter, donated more than 300 pounds of dog food, cat food and animal treats to The Paws Squad, a local dog rescue program.
Roxy said she had a reason for not wanting gifts for her birthday.
“Because I love dogs and I wanted them to be happy,” Roxy said.
Roxy said she thought other children might want to do the same thing for their birthdays.
“Because it makes you feel good,” Roxy said.
Anyone wanting to also contribute to The Paws Squad may contact them via their Facebook page, www.facebook.com/thepawssquadwv or donations can be mailed to The Paws Squad, Rt. 4 Box 5-F, Chapmanville, WV 25508.
