Last weekend, the Chapmanville Regional High School track and field team competed in the Charleston Gazette/Friends of Coal relay at Charleston’s Laidley Field and had a good showing against some of the best teams in the state.
Once again, Ethan Thompson and NeNe Osborne were shining stars for Chapmanville.
Thompson took the first place medal in the 100-meter dash with his personal best time.
Osborne took a sixth-place ribbon in the 100-meter dash on the girs’ side.
Thompson’s biggest competitor from Wayne wasn’t at this meet but Osborne’s was. Osborne beat one of her other top competitors, Katie Preece from Scott High School. Another one of her foes, Emilee Henry of Herbert Hoover, placed ahead of her.
“We hope to surpass Emilee in this week’s Cardinal Conference meet hosted by Poca,” Chapmanville coach Joetta Thompson said. “Ethan will face his competitor, Kade Sabastian, from Wayne on Thursday at Poca also. Both of these outstanding athletes will make it to the state competition baring no injuries and i hope to see them place as well. They are both just sophomores and have two years left to compete.”
Chapmanville’s 4x200 girls’ meter relay team is ranked No. 10 in the state in Class AAA.
“I hope to see them win this Thursday and I am planning on making it to the state finals with them as well as my boys 4x200 meter relay team,” Coach Thompson said.
The girls’ relay team is made up of: Mara Mazzocchi, Osborne, Tanisha Adams and Richelle Thompson. The boys’ relay team is comprised of: Ethan Thompson, Andrew Thompson, Joseph Adkins and Jeff Lunsford with Caleb Vance as alternate.
Mazzocchi also placed Saturday in the 400-meter run.
“She is expected to do well this week also. She is a junior and this is her second year with the CRHS track team,” Coach Thompson said.
