For the second straight day, the Logan High School baseball team’s Class AAA sectional tournament game at St. Albans was rained out.
After a Thursday rain out, the game was moved to Friday, but it too, was washed away by rain.
The two teams were scheduled to meet each other on Saturday afternoon at St. Albans High School. Logan carried a 21-8 record into the sectional tourney. St. Albans stood at 10-11.
The Wildcats are then scheduled to host Nitro on Monday at 6:30 p.m. at Logan’s Roger E. Gertz Field. Nitro is 21-6 on the season.
Then on Tuesday at 6:30, Nitro is slated to host St. Albans in Game 3 of the sectionals.
The two remaining teams are then set to play on Wednesday night in the finals.
Logan is hoping to win its second straight sectional championship after moving into the current section with Nitro and St. Albans. The Wildcats won 12 straight sectional crowns from 2000-11 before being upset in the section finals in 2012 by South Charleston.
Logan carries a nine-game winning streak into the post-season.
The Cats’ last loss was a 5-4, 9-inning setback at home to Ripley on April 30.
Logan is undefeated in the month of May. It all began on May 1 with a 15-0 win at Scott. Logan then won at home over Winfield, 3-2, on May 2. Then after knocking off Lawrence County (Ky.), 13-3, at home on May 5, the Wildcats beat Ripley again, 9-2, on the road on May 6.
LHS has since won over Lincoln County (14-4), Man (12-0), George Washington (4-3 in 10 innings), Hurricane (2-1 in 9 innings) and Hurricane (9-5) again on May 13 on the road.
Also rained out on Friday night was the Logan High School softball team’s Class AAA regional semifinal contest at home with Point Pleasant. It was originally slated to be played on Thursday but it was rained out and pushed to Friday.
The game was then moved to Saturday afternoon.
The Logan girls are 27-4 and ranked No. 4 in the state in Triple-A. Point Pleasant is No. 10 in the state and have a 24-8 record.
If Logan wins over the Lady Knights, it would play in the Class AAA regional championship game on Thursday, May 22 against the winner of the Lincoln County-Cabell Midland game. Cabell Midland (16-7) is No. 3 in the state while LC (20-6) is No. 6.
The Lady Cats have already won the sectional title and are riding a six-game winning streak going into regional play. After winning the sectional tourney, Logan won a pair of tune-up games at home over Scott (1-0) and county rival Man (6-0).
The state tournament is set for May 28-29 at Vienna.
The Man High School softball team’s Class A regional semifinal home game with Sherman on Friday was also rained out and moved to Monday at 6 p.m. at Man.
Both the Logan High School baseball and softball teams lost on Saturday.
The Logan baseball team fell 4-3 in nine innings at St. Albans in the Class AAA sectional tourney opener, while the LHS Lady Cats lost to Point Pleasant.
The defeat puts the Wildcats’ backs against the wall in the double-elimination section baseball tournament.
Logan is 21-9 on the season and are facing elimination. The Cats must beat Nitro on Monday night at home in order to stay alive.
The Logan softball team saw its season come to a close with Saturday’s 2-0 loss at home to Point Pleasant in the Class AAA Region 4 semifinals. The Lady Cats closed out at 27-5.
Point Pleasant (25-8) moves on to host Lincoln County on Thursday in the regional championship game for the right to play in the state tournament.
Karissa Cochran pitched a complete game shutout win for Point. She allowed just three hits and struck out 11 while walking one.
Point Pleasant scored its two runs in the top of the sixth inning off Logan starter Aarron Ward. Makinley Higginbottom had an RBI double and Cochran clubbed an RBI single during the frame.
Hana Sedlock pitched for Logan in relief.
Summer Collins had two of Logan’s three base hits — both on bunt singles. Senior second baseman Shelby Hale had the other hit — a sharply hit single to left field.
