Man, C-ville undefeated in 7-8 tourney

MAN — It was a classic.

That’s all that you could say about Sunday afternoon’s clash between Chapmanville and Tug Valley in the District 2 Little League Baseball Coach Pitch 7-8-year-old Tournament.

The Chapmanville All-Stars won the game, 20-19, at the Man Little League’s Tommy Keffer Field, scoring three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning in the see-saw battle.

Andrew Farley was the hero for Chapmanville as he laced a two-run, walk-off double.

It appeared as if the game was over as Chapmanville plated nine runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to turn a 12-8 deficit into a 17-12 lead.

Tug Valley, however, fought back, pushing seven runs across in the top of the sixth to grab a 19-17 lead.

Chapmanville pulled to within 19-18 in the bottom of the sixth with Corey Johnson’s RBI single. Then after a single by Alaira Evans, Farley brought both home with a deep double to center field for the game-winner.

Tug Valley had inched to within 17-15 in the top of the sixth with a two-run, inside-the-park homer by Julian Vance. Elijah Fluty then tied it 17-17 with a two-run single. Tug’s Adam Slone then put his team ahead 19-17 with a two-run inside-the-park homer.

Chapmanville led 1-0 after one inning and forged a 3-3 tie after two. Chapmanville led 4-3 after three and the game was tied 8-8 after four. Chapmanville led 17-12 after five innings.

Vance was 5-for-5 with a homer, a double and three RBI to lead Tug Valley.

Matt Hatfield was 2-for-5 with two RBI, while Conner Lackey went 3-for-3 with a double.

Isaac Deskins was 2-for-5 with a triple and two RBI. Slone was 1-for-4 with the two-run homer.

Kaleb Tomblin was 2-for-3 with a double and two RBI.

Ethan Ferrrell was 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI. Parker Watts was 3-for-4 with a triple and two runs knocked in.

Catcher Zach Hall added a hit for Tug Valley. Luke Williamson also had a hit.

For Chapmanville, Evans was 4-for-4 with a double and two RBI. She had a two-run double to deep center in the fourth inning which put Chapmanville ahead 8-6.

Catcher Derek Ferrell was 4-for-4 with four RBI.

Adam Mullins was 3-for-5 with a three-run, inside-the-park homer in the fifth inning.

Sam Miller was 4-for-5, while Talan Thompson, the younger brother to Chapmanville Regional High School all-state player Tristan Thompson, was 3-for-5 at the plate with two doubles and two RBI.

Johnson, the younger brother to former Chapmanville Regional all-state pitcher Craig Johnson, was 2-for-5 with a double and three RBI.

Farley finished 3-for-5 with the game-winning two-run double.

Ian Plumley was 3-for-3 with two runs batted in. A.J. Motto was 2-for-3 with one RBI. Daniel Atwood added a hit for Chapmanville.

Chapmanville outhit Tug Valley 29-22.

Chapmanville, 1-0 in Pool A play in the District 2 tourney, was scheduled to play Pineville on Monday night. Tug Valley (1-1) was slated to take on Delbarton (0-1) in an all-Mingo County matchup on Monday.

Tug Valley then has an off day on Tuesday before facing host Man on Wednesday at 8 p.m. Delbarton plays Chapmanville at 6 p.m. on Wednesday.

Tuesday’s games have Delbarton facing Pineville at 6 p.m. and Welch playing Mullens at 8.

The District 2 pool play is set to wrap up on Thursday with the Madison vs. Sandy River game at 6 p.m. and the Man vs. Tug Valley game at 8. The semifinals are Friday and the championship game is set for Saturday at 7 p.m. at Man.

Tug Valley, Chapmanville, Man, Delbarton and Pineville are in Pool A.

Pool B consists of Madison, Mullens, Welch and Sandy River.

Pineville 8

MAN — The Man 7-8-year-old all-stars swept past Pineville 19-8 in Sunday’s nightcap of the District 2 Tournament at Man’s Tommy Keffer Field.

Man improved to 2-0 in the tournament and stayed in first place of Pool A, one-half game ahead of Chapmanville (1-0) and a game in front of Tug Valley (1-1).

The Man All-Stars jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning off Pineville.

Bo Thompson had a two-run double to make it 2-0. Pineville (0-2) then answered to take a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the first inning thanks to four Man errors. Brady Morgan had the big blow — a two-run single.

The Man All-Stars then scored three times in the top of the second frame to take the lead back at 5-3. Jayden Brumfield had an RBI double to tie the game up at 3-3. Bradley Brown later laced a two-run single to put Man up 5-3.

Pineville cut it to 5-4 in the bottom of the second inning on an RBI single off the bat of Morgan.

Man then pulled away in the top of the third inning of play, sending nine batters to the plate and scoring six runs to take a commanding 11-4 lead and never looked back. Braxton Messer had a two-run double during the frame. James Scites, Brown and Brumfield all had RBI hits. Thompson also had a two-run double.

Pineville added two runs in the bottom of the third inning to cut the Man lead to 11-6.

Man then added three more runs in the top of the fourth inning to make it 14-8. Ben Vest, Braden Compton and Brumfield had RBI hits in the inning.

The Pineville All-Stars added two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to make it 14-8.

However, Man busted the game wide open with five runs in the top of the fifth inning to take a commanding 19-8 lead. Drake Veres had a two-run triple to make it 16-8. Jacob Bartram added an RBI single and Compton had an RBI ground out to increase the margin to 18-8. Man scored its final run as Messer reached on an error to up the margin to 19-8.

Man then got Pineville out in order in the bottom of the fifth inning as the game was halted due to the mercy rule.

In other District 2 games on Sunday, Madison (2-0) defeated Welch (1-1) by a score of 22-8 in Pool B. Mullens also improved to 1-1 in Pool B play with a 16-15 victory over Sandy River (0-2).

Tug Valley lost 20-19 to Chapmanville in Pool A action.
