LOGAN — A Pike County, Ky., man is dead after a fight at a residence in Logan County.

Troopers with the Logan Detachment of the West Virginia State Police told the Daily News that from information gathered at the scene, the argument that ended in the Kentucky man’s death allegedly started over a child custody dispute.

State police said that Matthew Dillon, 30, of Belfry, Ky., got into an argument Monday that soon turned into a physical confrontation with Rex Hale on Cassick Street in Logan. During the fight, Dillon received serious injuries that allegedly led to his death. Hale was taken by ambulance to the Regional Medical Center, where he was treated for numerous injuries he sustained during the altercation.

“You would think parents would be able to work things out and not let it come to that, but it’s unfortunate that it did,” neighbor James Smith said in an interview with an area television station. “It’s very sad when someone gets killed over something that could have been worked out.”

State police say that after the fight broke out, a 6-year-old girl ran out of the house and asked a neighbor to call 911. It was not certain as to whether the girl was the juvenile at the center of the controversial custody fight.

No arrests have been made at this time and the state police say it is not yet clear whether Hale will be charged in Dillon’s death, since it appears that Hale may have been acting in self-defense. The investigation is ongoing and further information will be released as it becomes available.
