MAN — Man’s George A. Queen Memorial Field has been getting a facelift over the past six months.
The home of the Man High School football team, the Man Middle School squad and also the Man Midget League, has a brand new look.
Two new ticket booths on each end of the stadium recently have been constructed.
The block structures were built by Central Contracting Inc. of St. Albans.
The lower end building has two new concession stands, plus two new locker rooms on the back side of the structure along with a dressing room for the referees and an additional restroom.
The upper building on the east end of the stadium has a ticket booth and storage space.
The construction project was funded by the Logan County Board of Education.
With the job done, Phase II of the George A. Queen Memorial Field project is now complete.
A few years back, the stadium underwent a major renovation process in which a brand new home grandstand was constructed, replacing the aging wooden bleachers. Phase I also was highlighted by a brand new locker room building, which also included a consession stand and bathrooms.
The Man Hillbillies are scheduled to have their home opener at the new-look George A. Memorial Field on Sept. 5 against the Mount View Golden Knights.
Man is slated to open the 2014 football season on the road on Aug. 29 at county rival Logan.
After reaching the Wheeling Super Six in 2009 and falling to Weirton Madonna in the Class A state championship game, Man football suffered through three straight losing seasons.
Last year, however, Man turned it around big time. After a 40-20 season opening loss at home to Logan, the Billies kicked it into gear, winning nine straight games and gaining homefield advantage for the Class A state playoffs with a 9-1 record.
The Billies, however, were upset 21-16 by Bishop Donahue at home in the first round of the Class A playoffs.
Man is scheduled to hold its first practices for the upcoming season on Aug. 4.
The Billies, coached by Harvey Arms, have two preseason scrimmages — Aug. 16 at Class AAA George Washington and Aug. 22 at the Midland Trail Gridorama.
