CHARLESTON - A man who police say stole a Kanawha County ambulance was released from the hospital and taken to jail.

Barry DeWayne Massey, 51, of Seth was charged with attempted grand larceny, grand larceny of a vehicle and fleeing in a vehicle after he allegedly stole an ambulance and led police on a pursuit on Jan. 24.

According to Kanawha County Ambulances, the ambulance was taken from Brooks Street while the ambulance was idling on a lot near Charleston General Hospital. The crew was in the office at the time of the incident.

Via GPS tracking, a police pursuit started nearby on Slack Street and ended on Mill Creek Road, according to Charleston Police. There were no patients inside the vehicle at the time.

The ambulance was not damaged in the incident and was put back into service.

After being taken into custody, Massey was transported to the hospital. He was released on Jan. 28 and taken to the South Central Regional Jail.
