VIPER — A Perry County man has been charged after being arrested for allegedly making meth in his residence where seven children also were found.

Shannon Hurt, of Viper, was arrested Wednesday morning after the Perry County Sheriff’s Office received an anonymous tip that he was manufacturing meth at his residence at 1009 Kentucky Hwy 7, just behind Couch’s Furniture, Appliances, and ATVs store.

Chief Deputy Tony Eversole said upon arrival, deputies found seven children in the residence ranging in age from 1 to 11, along with a rifle, handgun, a bag of unidentified pills, and meth.

“They’ve located some meth inside the residence and a cooler where they were cooking meth outside the residence,” Eversole said, explaining that the cooler was situated to the side of the house under an overhang and was not visible from the road.

The children were transported to Hazard ARH Wednesday afternoon for evaluation, Eversole said.

“We’re going to take them to the emergency room and get them figured and be checked for meth and see if they’ve had any kind of exposure,” he said.

Eversole said there was another female living in the residence with Hurt, however, an investigation is still ongoing as to whether or not she will face any charges.

After he had been handcuffed and was waiting to be placed in the deputies’ cruizer, deputies said Hurt attempted to flee from police by running into the hills behind his house, however he was quickly apprehended.

“He (Hurt) is a convicted felon, so he’s going to face numerous charges,” Eversole said.

Hurt has been charged with one count unlawful possession of meth precursors, first-degree possession of a controlled substance, convicted felon in possession of a handgun, and first-degree fleeing or evading police and is currently being held at the Kentucky River Regional Jail. Eversole said Hurt may also face several wanton endangerment charges.
