CHIEF LOGAN STATE PARK — The Southern West Virginia Stingrays scored two victories in their first swim meet as part of the HYCAT Swim Club on Saturday at the Chief Logan Rec Center.

The Stingrays’ Quincy Farley, 10, win the breast stroke and 100 freestyle heats, while nine-year-old Lauren Workman won the 50 freestyle.

The Stingrays were competing against swimmers from all across the state, including Fairmont and Charleston. There were 50 swimmers competing in the event.

Coach Kristy Schroeder said the Chief Logan Rec Center’s new swim team performed well in its first meet as part of the HYCAT organization, which is a division of USA Swim.

“I thought they did really well for their first USA Swim experience,” Schroeder said. “We had much more intensity and my swimmers hung right in with everyone else. This is a good accomplishment for our team.”

Schroeder has been coaching the Stingrays for two seasons and she said she can see a lot of improvement in her swimmers.

“I am looking forward to competing in more meets in the future,” Schroeder said.

The Stingrays will host the Beckley YMCA Swim Team on October 20 at the Chief Logan Rec Center for their next meet. The Beckley swim team has been competing for two seasons, too.

“It will be a good competition,” Schroeder said. “They should be the same speed as us and their ability level should be about the same as my kids.”

The Chief Logan Rec Center pool area was packed with cheering parents and swim fans from all over. Attending the meet was Skip Queen, who was in charge of the first swim meet last season.

Greg Olsen, who is the head coach and director of the HYCAT program out of Charleston, said he is pleased that the Stingrays are now part of his organization.

“I am tickled to death that they are doing it,” Olsen said. “They will be called HYCAT of Southern West Virginia. I’m tickled to death to see swimming down in the southern part of the state.”
