Becky Blevins will remain in her position as the Bell County Clerk, according to Bell County Judge-Executive Albey Brock.
“Becky is still the clerk and will be until she resigns … or is removed from office by a court of law,” said Brock.
If Blevins resigned or was removed from office then Brock would name a replacement to serve as clerk until an election could be held. There are no plans to appoint an interim clerk, he said.
The clerk’s office was closed on Friday during Blevins’ absence.
Blevins was being held at the Harlan County Detention Center. She is not facing any charges in Harlan County.
The Daily News left contact information for Blevins with the Harlan County Detention Center on Monday, but has received no call. Her bond was reduced to $25,000.
There was no information available late Monday on whether or not the clerk’s office will open today.
Blevins’ absence could also cause a cancellation in the regular fiscal court meeting, but no further information has been obtained regarding the situation.
Blevins, 45, along with Flora Ferrell and Kayla Carnes, was arrested Friday morning and charged with failure to make required disposition of property over $500 and less than $10,000.
Blevins was charged with criminal possession of a forged instrument and first-degree official misconduct as well.
Ferrell, 55, and Carnes, 23, were also charged with criminal conspiracy, a Class A misdemeanor. Connie Watkins, 40, was charged with second-degree criminal possession of a forged instrument. Ferrell, Carnes and Watkins are being held at the Bell County Detention Center.
The investigation reportedly identified more than 50 individuals who bought vehicles from outside of Kentucky and never received a tax refund that they were owed.
Blevins, Ferrell and Carnes are accused of keeping approximately $12,200 in refunds.
Watkins is accused of assisting in the scheme.
The Office of the Attorney General received the case following an audit by the Kentucky State Auditor’s Office. The investigation is ongoing.
