The Logan County Schools FIRST Robotics Team 337 was victorious at their first competition this season.

On March 21-22, teams from across the United States gathered at Perdue University in Lafayette, Ind., for the Boilermaker Regional Event. All teams had one goal in mind — to earn a spot at the FIRST Championship event which will be held on April 17-19 at the Edward Jones Dome in St. Louis, Mo.

“Our team is excited for the new competition hoping to strive above and beyond last year’s achievements,” Peggy Vance, director of populations for Logan County Schools.

Vance said that while there, Team 337 braved the competition and succeeded in being the number one seed. As the alliance captain, STAR-bot went on to the quarterfinal rounds where they made their way to the semi finals. STAR-bot was defeated in the semi finals when their alliance partners had mechanical malfunctions leaving STAR-bot to battle three opponents alone.

“Although STAR-bot performed excellent in the qualifying rounds, the FIRST Competition is about much more than just building a great robot,” Vance said. “FIRST is, foremost, about spreading the concepts of science and technology throughout the community and abroad.”

For their efforts in doing that, FIRST Team 337 received the Engineering Inspiration Award. This is the second highest award FIRST bestows upon a team.

The team also won the Underwriters Industrial Safety Award for their outstanding safety procedures during the competition.

The Logan County Schools FIRST Robotics Team 337 is very appreciative to their sponsors — Alpha Natural Resources, AEP (American Electric Power), and local businesses, as well as the Logan County Board of Education and the Logan County Commission for their continued support.

FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) is a multinational non-profit organization that sponsors annual robot competitions to generate an interest in science and engineering among today’s youth.

Founded in 1989, FIRST operates the FIRST Robotics Competition in which teams of high school students, sponsored and assisted by local companies and volunteers, design, assemble, and test a robot capable of performing a specified task in competition with other teams.
