Two people were killed Friday morning in an two vehicle automobile crash at Steamwell near McConnell.
According to the Logan County Sheriff’s office, at approximately 7:46 a.m. members of the Logan County Sheriff’s Department responding to the accident learned that Rita Overbee, 53, was operating a 1998 Buick Sedan and traveling north on Rt. 10. The passenger in her vehicle was her son, Robert Overbee, 28, both of which were from Welch.
The second vehicle, a 2007 Dodge Ram, was operated by Ernest Jewell II, 25, from Lenore. He was traveling south on Rt. 10.
According to witnesses and evidence at the scene, Rita Overbee who was operating the Buick Sedan was traveling at a high rate of speed and failed to slow down when she entered a curve in the roadway. At this point her vehicle traveled across the center line and into the pathway of Jewell, when the two vehicles struck.
Rita and Robert Overbee received fatal injuries. Both were trapped inside their vehicle and had to be extracted by members of the Logan Fire Department. They were taken to the Logan Regional Medical Center where they were pronounced dead. Neither of the Overbees was wearing a seatbelt.
Jewell received minor injuries and was also taken to the LRMC where he was treated and released.
The accident is still being investigated.
