MAN — The Man High School boys’ basketball team opened up the 2013-14 season with a convincing 21-point win over Mount View on Tuesday night at the Man Memorial Fieldhouse as the Hillbillies won 68-47.

Sophomore John Thomas Keffer led the way with 16 points for Man (1-0). He also dished out seven assists and had eight steals.

Keffer sealed the deal at the end of the game as he hit 8-of-10 free throws in the final three minutes of play.

The Billies’ lone senior on the team, Cayce Mullins, finished with a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds.

Kenny Joe Adkins also placed in double digits in scoring with 13 points, including three 3-pointers on the evening.

Freshman Daniel Buchannon had fine debut with 12 points and 7 rebounds.

“We played really well being our first game,” Man coach Harvey Arms said. “We had a good balanced scoring attack, played aggressive on the boards and had a good eight-man rotation as the three players off the bench did well. But we still have to keep working to get better.”

Adkins jump-started the Hillbillies with two 3-pointers at the start the game as Man led 6-4 with 6:17 showing on the opening quarter clock.

Buchannon and Mullins then sank buckets to push the Man advantage to 10-6 with 4:35 to go.

Mount View’s Darnell Bonds then hit a shot in the paint to cut the Man lead to 11-10 with 3:20 to play.

Man’s Jake Adkins then converted on a three-point play to make it 14-10.

Mount View’s Rashawn Brooks then hit a trey to cut the Man lead to 14-13 with 2:40 to play in the first. freshman Daniel Buchannon hit a shot down low and Mullins hit two free throws as Man took a 18-13 led after first quarter of play.

Buchannon followed with a short jumper and Mullins drained a 3 to put Man ahead 23-15 with 6:50 left until the half.

Man pushed its lead to 10 points at the 4:48 mark after a hoop by Gabby Brown.

Jake Adkins later scored on a fast break layup to make it 29-18 with 2:09 to play in the first half.

Brooks scored on a three-point play to make it 29-21.

Buchannon then got the final points of the second period to give Man a 31-21 halftime advantage.

Mullins got Man started on the right foot in the second half as he scored the first field goal of the third quarter on an assist by Keffer as the Billies led 33-21.

The Golden Knights then went on a mini 5-0 run, cutting the deficit to 33-26 with 6:30 left, forcing Coach Arms to take a timeout.

Man then came out and went on a 7-1 run on baskets by Keffer and Mullins and a 3-ball by Kenny Joe Adkins to make it 40-27 with 2:52 remaining in the third.

The Billies’ Erik Files then came off the bench and drained a 3-pointer to put Man ahead by 18 points at the 1:28 mark. Man would lead 47-31 heading into the fourth period.

Keffer started off the fourth quarter by converting a three-point play to up the margin to 50-31.

Mount View later hit four free throws to make it a 53-40 ballgame with 4:14 to go in the contest.

The Knights then had to foul and Keffer further put the game in Man’s favor by sinking four free throws to push the margin to 57-40.

Kenny Joe Adkins then hit a runner in the lane and Keffer added a steal and score to give the Billies a 61-42 advantage with 2:32 to play to all but put the win on ice.

Jake Adkins added seven points for Man. Brown had four and Files 3. Man was 15-for-24 from the foul line.

Bonds led Mount View with 12 points while Brooks had 11. The Knights were only 12-for-27 from the charity stripe.

Man returns to action on Friday night at Montcalm.
