It’s still early in the season but it was a big win for the Logan High School girls’ basketball team on Friday night at home over Huntington.

The Lady Cats improved to 2-2 on the season with the 62-54 over the Class AAA sectional rival Highlanders in a game played at Logan’s Willie Akers Arena.

Logan had knocked off Huntington 78-70 in the first game of last year’s sectional tourney on the Highlanders’ home floor.

Huntington was looking for revenge on the Lady Cats this time but it wasn’t meant to be as Logan won its second game in a row. Huntington, which dropped to 4-1, was handed its first loss of the season.

Shayna Gore led Logan with a 25-point effort and eight assists. Monica Mitchell added a double-double with 20 points and 15 rebounds.

Huntington led Logan 15-13 after one quarter and 25-24 at the half. Logan then outscored the Highlanders 10-9 in the third to tie it up at 34 after three quarters of play. Logan then outpointed Huntington 28-20 in the fourth to take control and to win the game.

Mariah Harmon, Lexi Sheffield, Jordyn Dawson and Ericka Budd scored 10 points each to lead Huntington’s balanced attack.

Logan also got eight points off the bench from Lexi Hines, five from Kyra Cline and two points each from Summer Collins and senior Hannah Kolovich.

The Lady Cats were scheduled to travel on Saturday afternoon to take part in the Belfry, Ky., tourney. Logan was set to play Shelby Valley, Ky., a team which lost to Westside on Friday night.

Logan is then back in action Dec. 26 at Spring Valley, another Class AAA sectional rival. The Lady Wolves beat Logan in last year’s 3A sectional championship game but lost to the Lady Cats 52-49 in the state tourney semifinals last March at the Charleston Civic Center.

After taking on Spring Valley, Logan is at county rival Chapmanville on Dec. 30. The next home game is after the New Year on Jan. 3 against South Charleston. Logan lost at South Charleston in the season opener.
