MAN — The Man High School boys’ basketbal team made it a clean sweep over Montcalm this season with Friday night’s 59-51 win on Friday night at the Man Memorial Fieldhouse.
The Hillbillies (5-4) had won 81-51 over Montcalm early in the season on the road.
Man was led by John Thomas Keffer’s 18 points. Erik Files had 13, while Daniel Buchanon had 10. Cayce Mullins, Gabby Brown and Jake Adkins had six points each.
Montcalm was led by Jacob Howard with 16, Tyler Goins with 12 and Jacob Lambert and Josh Hamlin with 10 each. Zack Coeburn had four and Travis Paynter two.
Man was 14-for-23 from the free throw line.
Montcalm jumped out to an early 6-0 lead after baskets by Hamlin, Howard and Lambert.
The Billies were very sluggish and missed their first seven shots.
Adkins hit a 3-pointer mid-way in the first period to cut the Montcalm deficit to 6-3 at the 4:01 mark.
Files, who was getting playing time for the injured Kenny Joe Adkins, hit two free throws to cut the deficit to 6-5. Keffer then followed with a jumper to give the Billies their first lead at 7-6.
Goins scored for Montcalm to give them the lead back at 8-7.
Jake Adkins then hit his second 3-pointer just before the first period buzzer to give the Billies a 10-8 advantage.
Keffer then scored on a fast break layup off the glass to start the second stanza and then stole the ball and scored again to give Man a 14-8 lead.
Lambert hit a runner in the paint to make it 14-10.
The freshman Buchanon then hit a shot inside the paint to give Man a 16-10 lead mid-way in the second period.
Brown then got loose under the basket and scored to give the Billies a 21-14 advantage with 2:50 on the clock.
Files drained a 3 with just a minute left in the first half to give the Billies a 26-18 cushion.
Goins followed with a 3-ball of his own to make it 26-21.
Mullins then scored with just five ticks on the clock to make it 28-21. But Montcalm wasn’t done as Hamlin hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer to cut the Man lead to 28-24 at the intermission.
Man took a 32-28 lead at the five-minute mark of the third on an assist by Keffer to Buchanan, a basket by Keffer and another one by Buchanon as the Billies pushed the lead to eight points at 36-28 with 3:58 left in the third quarter.
Goins nailed a 3-pointer to make it 36-31 with 3:48 to go.
Files and Brown got baskets for Man in the final minute of play to give the Billies a 40-31 lead heading into the final eight minutes of play.
Keffer then converted on an old-fashioned three-point play to start the fourth period of play to give Man a 12-point lead at 43-31.
Files scored on a jumper to up the margin to 44-31, forcing Montcalm to take a time out with 6:30 to play in the game.
Lambert hit a 3-pointer mid-way in the quarter to make it 47-36 Man.
Keffer hit one of two free throws with 2:30 to play to give the Billies a 48-39 lead.
Lambert then got back-to-back baskets to cut the Man deficit to a five-point game at 48-43 with 2:01 remaining.
Keffer then hit two free throws with 1:51 to play to push the Billies’ lead back to seven at 50-43.
Hamlin hit a shot to cut the lead back to five points at 50-45.
A goaltending call on Montcalm and a bucket by Files put Man back up by nine points at 54-45 with 1:07 on the clock.
Coeburn then hit a jumper to make it 54-47 with 54 ticks on the clock.
Keffer then hit two charity tosses to give the Billies 56-47 advantage with 39 seconds left.
Hamlin hit a jumper, trimming the margin to 56-51 with 20 seconds left.
Man’s Keffer hit one of two free throws to make it 57-51 and Files drained two free throws with just nine seconds left to give the Billies a hard fought 59-51 victory and season sweep.
The Billies were scheduled to get back into action with Saturday’s Hatfield-McCoy Shootout game against Wesley Christian (Ky.) at Williamson.
Man plays at Tug Valley on Wednesday night.
