CHAPMANVILLE — It’s Chapmanville against Bluefield.

The Chapmanville Regional High School boys’ basketball team, which defeated Nicholas County in Thursday night’s dramatic 44-41 Region 4 co-championship game at the CRHS gym, have drawn the Bluefield Beavers in next week’s state tournament.

Chapmanville (20-5) is seeded sixth and is scheduled to face No. 3 seed Bluefield (22-2) next Wednesday at 9:30 a.m. in the state quarterfinals at the Charleston Civic Center.

It’s the first ever trip to the state tournament for Chapmanville.

The seedings were released late on Thursday night by WV Metro News.

Robert C. Byrd has grabbed the No. 1 seed. RCB, also the No. 1-ranked Class AA team in the state, is scheduled to open state play on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. against No. 8 seed East Fairmont.

In the other two state quarterfinals, No. 2 seed Poca takes on No. 7 Fairmont Senior at 1 p.m. on March 19, while No. 4 Westside takes on No. 5 Bridgeport at 9 p.m.

The Chapmanville-Bluefield winner is set to take on the Poca/Fairmont Senior winner on Friday, March 21 at 9:30 a.m.

The 2A state championship game is March 22 at noon at the Charleston Civic Center.

The Bluefield Beavers will be a formidable for the Tigers.

Bluefield advanced to state with Thursday night’s 77-67 victory over Wyoming East in its regional co-championship game. The Beavers are riding a 15-game winning streak going into the state tournament.

Bluefield’s last loss was a 62-57 setback on Jan. 27 to state tourney team Westside. The Beavers also lost 67-51 at Greenbrier East on Jan. 10.

Chapmanville and Bluefield have some athletic history with each other.

Back in 2007, the CRHS football team lost 41-18 at Bluefield in the state quarterfinals at Bluefield’s Mitchell Stadium.

It was the Beavers which beat the Logan boys’ basketball team, 42-40, in the first round of the 2004 Class AA state tourney. The Logan Wildcats are coached by Mark Hatcher, the son of current Chapmanville Regional head coach Allan Hatcher.
