MAN — The Man and Chapmanville 7-8-year-old Coach Pitch All-Stars each picked up wins on Wednesday night during pool play action in the District 2 Tournament at Man’s Tommy Keffer Field.

In Game One, Chapmanville toppled Delbarton, 16-11, to stay alive in the tournament.

Man downed Tug Valley, 14-6, in Game 2.

Man (3-0) currently leads Pool A, while Chapmanville (2-1) is one game behind. Tug Valley (2-2) and Pineville (2-2) are still in contention.

Man was set to play Chapmanville on Thursday night during the final night of pool play action.

The top two teams in each pool advance to play in the two semifinal games on Friday night at Man.

If Man wins it would clinch the Pool A championship with a 4-0 record. That would create a three-way tie for second place with Chapmanville, Tug Valley and Pineville all finishing with identical 2-2 records. Only one of those three teams would then advance via tiebreaker, to the semifinals.

If Chapmanville beats Man both would be 3-1 and both would advance.

In the four-team Pool B, Madison (2-0) and Welch (2-1) have already moved on to the semifinals.

Chapmanville was led by Talan Thompson in the win over Delbarton. He went 3-for-4 with three triples and three runs scored. Sam Tiller, Alaira Evans and Derek Ferrell were each 4-for-4 at the plate, while Adam Mullins was 4-for-5.

Corey Johnson was 3-for-4 for Chapmanville, while Andrew Farley and Ian Plumley were both 2-for-2. Daniel Atwood, A.J. Motto and Jeff Baisden each added a hit.

Malaki Sheppard was 4-for-4 for Delbarton, which finished the tourney with an 0-4 record. One of his hits was an inside-the-park homer.

In the nightcap, Man and Tug Valley played a tight game through four innings as Man clinged to a 4-3 lead.

Man took control in the fifth inning, sending nine batters to the plate and scoring seven runs to take a commanding 10-3 lead. Drake Veres had an RBI double to make it 5-3. Jacob Bartram reached on an error as the lead swelled to 6-3. Braden Compton’s RBI single made it 7-3. Jayden Brumfield’s clutch two-run triple increased the margin to 9-3. Braxton Messer’s RBI single then pushed the lead to 10-3.

Tug Valley came back with Adam Slone’s two-run single as TV closed to within 11-5. Zach Hall then had an RBI single to make it 11-6 in the bottom of the fifth inning but Man added three more runs in the top of the sixth to grab a 14-6 advantage on RBI singles by Bartram, Compton and Brumfield.

Man then got Ethan Ferrell and Kaleb Tomblin out in the bottom of the sixth inning and the game was called due to the mercy rule as Tug Valley was mathmatically eliminated and was unable to come back from the eight-run deficit.

Tug Valley’s Isiah Deskins added a two-run homer in the bottom of the third, trimming Man’s lead to 4-3.

Veres had two doubles and a single for Man.

Bradley Brown added a triple and a single, while Brumfield had two singles and a triple. Bo Thompson had a double for Man.

Hunter Gibson and Compton tacked on two singles each. James Scites, Messer and Bartram each had a hit for Man.
