This is in response to the article “Democrats lose sight of principled stand” in the “Where We Stand” section on the Opinion page of the October 18, 2013, issue of the Logan Banner. Surely, I can’t be the only one to read this article and see how the Republicans are attempting to minimize the damage to their Party by inferring that the Democrats have also done something wrong.
First, the article says that the Democrats were right in not succumbing to extortion to get the government reopened and the nation’s debts paid, but then, turns right around and says that the Democrats were wrong not to accept the deal to delay the medical device tax and some other small items that would have ended the shut-down several days earlier.
Without even knowing exactly what those other small items were, it’s a safe bet that they were things that would have benefited only the rich as the delay of the medical device tax surely would have. According to the news I’ve watched, that medical device tax will bring in billions of dollars to help pay for the Affordable Care Act, and that’s why those corporations that make those devices have spent millions of dollars lobbying both the Republicans and Democrats to try to repeal it or delay it.
The article went on to say that the “Democrats have ceded some of their high ground” because of the sequester. However, the sequester had absolutely nothing to do with the government shut-down, and the Republicans are only setting the stage for the next fight over the budget in January by inferring that the Democrats are overreacting to the sequester.
The Republican Party did not suddenly come to their senses and realize how much pain they were inflicting on our nation. For as long as the pain was only being inflicted on the poor, the working poor, and the middle class, the Republican Party seemed to be content to let the shut-down go on indefinitely. It was only when the possibility of pain being inflicted on the rich by a breech of the debt-ceiling that Wall Street and people like the Koch brothers told their fellow Republicans to end the shut-down.
The Democrats did stand by their principles and the government was reopened, but unfortunately, that won’t stop the Republicans from doing the same thing again. The Republican Party does not regret having shut down the government, they only regret not being able to keep it shut down until they got their way. The last thing our nation needs is for our state of West Virginia to send another Republican to Congress in the election next year.
