Logan County’s Man Energy Express program hosted a couple of special guests this week: Tony Evans from the West Virginia Division of Forestry and his friend Smokey the Bear.
Evans spoke to the children in the Energy Express summer literacy program on the topics of forest fires and fire preventions: why preventing forest fires is important, how each person can help prevent forest fires and the harm caused by forest fires.
The children, ranging from ages four to twelve, stayed actively engaged during the presentation, citing the effects of forest fires on the ecosystem and community. Their lesson on forestry lead to a long discussion of all of the items produced from trees and nature.
After the conversation settled down, Evans brought in his friend Smokey. Smokey mingled amongst the children speaking, telling stories and taking pictures. Prior to their departure, Evans and Smokey provided the kids in attendance with a take home bag full of educational goodies.
