RED JACKET – They have a saying up in Wayne that “no one circles the wagons like the Wayne Pioneers.”

The last two seasons Wayne has won the Class 2A state championship. They entered this season as the favorite to three-peat and they head up on the hill to take on Mingo Central with a perfect 4-0 record. Wayne comes in ranked No. 3 this week in the SSAC poll.

Wayne easily dismantled previously ranked No. 2 ranked Sissonville this past Friday. Needless to say it will be a tough task for the Miners this Friday night. This is Wayne’s first regular season visit to Mingo Central (3-1) Friday night.

Last week junior Mason Hodge ran for 154 yards and four touchdowns on just 11 carries, while quarterback Grant Ferguson added 148 yards on nine attempts as the Pioneers rolled visiting Sissonville, 58-19, at Pioneer Field.

The Indians, who came into last Friday’s contest rated above Wayne, fell victim to a flurry of Pioneer points in the second quarter.

Wayne scored 31 points in the second period, including a Cody Stiltner 65-yard punt return and a Chandler Fry 43-yard fumble return, as the Pioneers took a 38-0 halftime lead last week. Sissonville (4-1) had only allowed 42 points through its first four games. Wayne went into that game ranked No. 4.

The contest will be a formidable task for the Mingo Central. The Miners, coming off a bye week, are ranked No. 11 this week.

Central has used several different backs this season including junior Chase Justice, Chance Lester, sophomore Deonte Joplin and senior Dekwon Willis. Sophomore Stevie Hammond is the quarterback and leads the team in touchdowns.

Senior Alex “Booger” Lee gives the Miners a chance to move the football via the air.

Statistically Joplin has 51 carries for 297 yards and 3 touchdowns (TDs),

Willis 29 attempts for 129 yards and 3 TDs, Justice 19 carries for 126 yards and a TD, Hammond 35 carries for 143 and 4 TDs and Lester 24 tries for 161 yards and 2 scores.

Passing yardages has Hammond completing 26 or 43 attempts for 376 yards, 2 TDs and 2 interceptions. Lee has caught 10 passes for 250 yards and 2 TDs.

Game time is 7:30 p.m. at Buck Harless Stadium. WXCC will carry the game with Joe Kinzer doing the play by play and Pedro Ledger providing the commentary and stats.
