KNOXVILLE, TN – The Belfry Pirates went on the road to win a big game as they topped Christian Academy of Knoxville, TN 27-21 on Friday night.
The Knoxville school is a strong Class 3A program in Tennessee.
Reserve senior running back Davontae Dari had a career night as he rushed for 98 yards and scored two touchdowns to lead the Pirates offense.
Dari was getting extra playing time because the Pirates have been hobbled by several injuries to some of their skill players.
Senior quarterback Sani Warren also scored a pair of rushing touchdowns and had 39 yards rushing. Freshman Andrew Fletcher had 83 yards on the grounds, while senior Trenity Carr had 70 yards rushing and junior Keaton Taylor added 26 yards.
The Pirates had 316 total yards rushing on 56 carries. They picked up 28 first downs against the Tennessee team.
Warren completed nine passes for 62 yards to compliment the strong rushing attack.
Freshman kicker Austin Woolum was 3-of-4 on his extra points. That was his first miss of the season.
Belfry’s defense held the city school to 230 yards on offense, 63 on the ground and 167 through the air.
Hayden Hatfield led the way with 10 tackles, followed by Joey Duty with seven, Cameron Catron with six and Reed Williamson with six stops.
Belfry will now play host to Lawrence County this Friday at CAM Stadium. The Pirates, ranked No. 1 in Class 3A, are now 7-0 on the season.
The Belfry High School 2003 Class AA State Championship football team will be recognized at the Belfry versus Lawrence County game on October 18. There will be a reception for all members of the team prior to the game in the cafeteria at 6:00 p.m. Introductions will be made during halftime.
