Kingwood, W.Va. —- The Mountaineer ChalleNGe Academy is pleased to announce that Cadet Justin Wallace Allen, the son of Marsha and Rickey Vance of Mount Gay, and Cadet Damian Lee Cooper, the son of Christine Adams of Mount Gay and the late Timothy Cooper of Logan, have completed the requirements for graduation. Cadets Allen and Cooper are two of 157 graduates from twenty-nine (29) counties across the State of West Virginia. Class 2-13 is the forty first (41st) class to complete this West Virginia National Guard Program. Commencement exercises were held Friday, December 13th, at the Craig Civic Center in Kingwood, WV.MG James A. Hoyer congratulated the Cadets and introduced the commencement speaker. WV State Senator Roman Prezioso, Jr. gave the commencement address.


While attending the Academy, Cadet Allen of Platoon 1 was recognized for receiving the Level I PT Award (2 times), 3-D Award, Mentorship Award, as well as obtaining the six Individual Values Recognition Ribbons. Cadet Allen also participated in the Presidential Physical Fitness Program.


Cadet Cooper of Platoon 5 was recognized for receiving the Instructor’s List (3 times), 3-D Award, Mentorship Award, as well as obtaining the six Individual Values Recognition Ribbons. Cadet Cooper also participated in the Presidential Physical Fitness Program.


All graduating Cadets have completed the 22-week residential phase of ChalleNGe which includes activities in eight core component areas ranging from Service to Community to Employability Skills. In addition to classroom studies, the Cadets traveled to the State’s Capitol in Charleston. Cadets in this class provided over 7,480 hours of Service to Community for such organizations as American Red Cross Blood Drive, Trout for Cheat, Food for Preston, Mountaineer Food Bank and Ms. Mary’s Food Pantry. Following graduation, these Cadets will begin a one-year post-residential phase of ChalleNGe that includes placement activities in education and/or employment.
