MAN — The June meeting of START (Seniors Taking Active Roles Today) was held Thurs., June 26, 2014, at Bruce McDonald Memorial United Methodist Church.
The United States of America’s birthday was celebrated with decorations of red, white and blue. The tables were adorned with centerpieces of exploding stars and “The Stars & Stripes” flags. Hanging from the ceiling were red, blue and silver stars.
A welcome and blessing of the food was followed by a rousing rendition of ‘America the Beautiful’. Those celebration birthdays in June were the leaders to the ‘pot luck’ lunch provided by members. Resident baker Zettie Brown made a cake to resemble the American Flag. She used blueberries with white star icing, red and white stripes.
Following the luncheon, minutes of the May meeting were read by Secretary Barbara Brunty and a treasury report by Treasurer Alice Harrison was given. Those recognized for celebrating birthdays in June included W.T. Coyer, Bob Frazier, and Gertie Moore.
START members voted to purchase a memorial block in memory of Bill Mitchell for the Memorial being built at the intersection of Rt. 10 and Hanging Rock Road, to be called Freedom Hill.
The next regularly scheduled meeting of START will be Thurs., July 24, at noon at Bruce McDonald Memorial United Methodist Church. All are invited to come enjoy great food and fellowship.
